AbstractGreen roofs are recognised globally as an essential component of sustainable building practices, offering environmental benefits and enhancing urban landscapes. Despite their significance, the adoption of green roofs in Durban, South Africa, has been limited. This study investigates the perceptions, awareness, and challenges surrounding green roof technology and implementation among design professionals, property developers, and architectural students in Durban. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques to gather data from professionals and students. Twelve professionals were interviewed, and 38 questionnaires were analysed from final-year architecture students at a university. The findings revealed a lack of familiarity and experience with green roofs among architects and property developers, with landscape architects exhibiting comparatively greater knowledge due to their involvement in green roof design and construction projects. Students displayed some awareness of green roofs but needed more confidence in their design and implementation. While green roofs hold promise for mitigating environmental impacts and enhancing urban sustainability, their adoption in Durban faces barriers stemming from limited awareness, structural concerns related to weight and plant selection, and perceived cost barriers. Professionals expressed a need for municipal incentives and greater public education to promote green roof adoption. Introducing green roof initiatives with enhanced outreach, particularly targeting university students, was suggested to increase awareness and encourage adoption. Addressing these challenges through increased education, incentives, and community engagement can accelerate the integration of green roofs into Durban's built environment, fostering a more sustainable and resilient cityscape. | ||
