Transmission of microwave (uW) and millimeter-wave (mmW) carriers optically at 1.55 um wavelength has become an important task recently. A main field of potential applications is the optical transmission and wireless distribution of broadband data in future pico-cellular access systems. Unfortunately, chromatic dispersion of D=7 ps/km/nm of standard singlemode fibers at 1550 nm leads to a significant penalty in detected signal strength. Based on a coherent model of the intensity modulated/direct detection (IM/DD) optical link we developed a general simulation tool for studying different architectures.
